AVOID THESE 3
MISTAKES WHEN
TRAVELING
Kia ora! Hello!
Traveling can be a truly empowering and transformative experience. It's a chance to explore new cultures, try new cuisines, and create unforgettable memories. However, even the most seasoned travelers can make mistakes that can dampen their overall experience. Sharing these top 3 mistakes that you should aim to avoid to ensure you have an amazing holiday.
# 1. Overpacking
One of the most common mistakes we all make make is overpacking. It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking you need to pack for every possible scenario, but lugging around heavy tueke (luggage) can make your trip exhausting and restrictive. Not to mention, you might end up wearing only half of what you've packed.
To avoid this mistake, plan your outfits in advance and pack versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched. Stick to essentials and research the weather and culture of your destination beforehand to pack accordingly. Remember, you can always buy items during your trip if needed. I have a created a Winter & a Summer packing checklist to help keep you (and I) packing light.
# 2. Overbooking
While it's essential to have an itinerary to make the most of your trip, overbooking every minute of your day can lead to burnout and disappointment. I have definitely fallen into the trap of trying to see too much in too little time, leaving exhausted and without truly experiencing the destinations - don’t follow in my footsteps on this one.
To avoid this mistake, give yourself some downtime to just chill. Allow for spontaneity and flexibility to truly immerse yourself in the local culture and take in the sights and sounds. Prioritize quality over quantity and savor each experience instead of rushing from one place to another.
# 3. Ignoring Local Etiquette
Traveling to new destinations means encountering different cultures and customs. Failing to respect local etiquette can not only lead to awkward situations but also create a negative impression of travelers from your home country. It's crucial to do your research and familiarise yourself with the local customs, traditions, and taboos before you arrive.
To avoid this mistake, try learn a few basic phrases in the local language and practice polite gestures, such as greeting, thanking, and apologising. Be aware of appropriate attire, respecting religious sites, and local customs regarding dining, tipping, and social interactions. By showing respect and understanding, you will have a more fulfilling and respectful experience.
Haere rā! Goodbye & happy traveling!
