NAPLES/NAPOLI,
ITALY
Living my best Italian life!
Day 81-84
Kia ora! Hello!
Eve of getting here - ripped my fav jeans so off shopping we went, immediately. Along the way we explored the Spanish Quarters - did you know that southern Italy once was part of Spain??
Another fun fact, you can become a master in pizza (who knew that was even a thing?!) but it takes 3yrs and can only do it in Napoli! So with that, Napoli are known for their pizzas and (most of them) did not disappoint! Can't beat a trust Margherita.
Day 1 - full day
We booked a tour to the Amalfi Coast, and unfortunately this is one of the very few days we have had bad weather. The tour stopped at Sorrento and Positano for quick photo break, then we had a few hours at Amalfi followed by an hour in Ravello.
Amalfi was pretty! Had coffee, explored St.Andrews and had a lemon sorbet in a giant sized lemon - tiktok told us about that one, and it was good but massive.
Once we arrived back in Napoli we wondered by Galleria Umberto I, again this is also really beautiful. It's a big grand open mall with apartments on the top floors but stores on the ground floor, with sculptured art along the walls and a glass ceiling.
There are many different flavoured spritz available, so we decided to have a night out and enjoy some of the bars around the Spanish Quarters - was a great night out!
Day 2 - full day
After last night's antics it was a very slow start to the day. First stop was to a monastery, Cloister of Santa Chiara, which was absolutely beautiful with all the art work everywhere along the walls and the tiled pillars.
Afterwards we tried to relive the Julia Roberts scene at Pizzeria da Michele but after 30mins waiting for a table we had to leave due to a tour booked at Napoli Sotterranea, so I guess I'll have to make do with creating my own Eat Pray Love moment.
The tour was for 1hr underground, exploring 1km (5%) of the old water ways that then became bunkers during WWII. Our guide Alex was really entertaining and kept it quite fun but also educational. There were some thin walkways you had to squeeze through, as soon as they became optional I tapped out - no thank you sir.
Day 3 - full day & travel day
We jumped on an 8am train over to the East Coast to see a city called Bari. It was much warmer here, to the point we were in jeans and a t-shirt for most the day whilst we saw locals with their puffers and scarfs. The stand outs from this day of wondering, stopping to eat & repeat were:
Seeing the Nonna's making fresh pasta down the small street
A restaurant we went for dinner that had lots of red high heels hanging from the ceiling. When I asked about it they said that a certain value from each pair of these shoes purchased in a store went towards a charity that helped women in domestic violent situations and the owner was showing support by having these hanging, but by also putting the helpline number on the bottom of the shoe for awareness.
Teatro Margherita - there was a photography exhibition of Elliot Erwitt’s work that included some pieces of Marilyn Monroe.
Now for a 10hr night train back up to Milan for a couple days before heading to France. How has my Italian life nearly come to an end?!
